Hatchet DPS Build – New World Season 9
This Hatchet DPS Build puts up top tier DPS numbers in New World Season 9. It provides high single-target damage and AoE damage on clumps of enemies, making it one of the top competitors of an Evade Rapier. This guide covers everything you’ll need from Skill Tree’s to Empower breakdowns to maximize your Hatchet DPS.
Mainhand Weapon
There are a few options you have for high level hatchets, since the best one is from the Sandwurm and is hard to obtain.

Duneborn Hook with Refreshing Move
Fire of Battle (if you got the 725 event version)
If you are making a custom Hatchet, the perks to aim for are:
- Keen Berserk
- Refreshing Move
- Rogue/Vicious/Attunement/Sundering Stacks

Offhand Weapon (options)

Attributes
With the amount of Magnify in most 725 builds, it’s very hard to hit the perfect split below, so priority should be given from top to bottom, to maximize damage output.
Strength | 350 |
Dexterity | 300 |
Intelligence | 25 |
Focus | 25 |
Constitution | 25 |
Armor
You should always aim for a light-weight armor set when you are in a DPS build to benefit from +15% base damage increase. Armor should then prioritize the following perks:
- Enchanted Ward
- Refreshing
- Refreshing Torrent
- Vital Synergy on chest
- Empowering Breaker on gloves
- Health/Anointed Lifesteal to fill the rest

Jewelry

Perks to aim for in an Amulet:
Protection
Empowered
Health
A great farmable amulet for Strike Protection for example is Sporelight Amulet.

Ring options will be the following:
Elemental Band
Azoth Crystal Ring
Perk options to aim for in a ring:
Keen Awareness/Slash Damage
Leeching
Hearty

Perks to aim for in an earring:
Empowering Toast
Refreshing Toast
Nimble
Heartrune
Brutal Heartrune of Grasping Vines is the main one, although there are others that work for various fights/sitiuations.
Typical Buffs and Trophies
In order to do maximum damage, the correct trophies and damage boosting buffs should be applied. The example below is for the Hive of Gorgon’s Raid, where you should ideally have 5 buffs above your health bar, and Major trophies at each of your 3 houses matching the enemy type.
- 3x Major Angry Earth Trophies – 3×5%(15%) Angry Earth Damage
- Infused Angry Earth Coating – 15% Angry Earth Damage
- Infused Angry Earth Ward – take 10% less damage from Angry Earth enemies
- Powerful Honing Stone – 7% Empower
- Desert Sunrise – reduce duration of incoming DoTs by 17.5%
- +48 food
How to Play
- Activate Berserk to gain 20% empower
- Use Rending Throw to apply 20% rend for 10s to one enemy
- Hit with 4 light attacks
- Use Raging Torrent to refresh the light attack chain, and cooldown other abilities
- Hit with 4 light attacks
- Use next ability that is off cooldown
The key to this rotation is using a full 4 light attacks and following up immediately with an ability. Refreshing Torrent is key to being able to keep this rotation going smoothly.
Depending on which offhand weapon you pick will determine when you should use it. For example with Inferno, you may start the fight with Incinerate to apply Weaken first, and use this as a fallback when you are unable to use a Hatchet ability after a few 4 light attack sequences.
Empower details

Tips To Remember
In this exact build, Inferno will scale with Strength, making its abilities still viable for ranged damage if you are not able to be within melee range, which maximizes damage uptime.
