Terminology

We use a mix of New World and video game terminology on most pages. Here are some of those words, phrases, and acronyms explained.

Aggro – when an enemy is targeting you, and you can see a red border around the enemy health bar, they are aggressive towards and targeting you

DPS – Damage Per Second. Commonly used to described a team member who is focused on dealing damage

AOE – Area of Effect. Commonly used to refer to weapon abilities that can damage a group of enemies

Empower – certain abilities and perks in the game give you bonus damage under the Empower label. Maximum bonus empower is +50% at any time

Rend – reduction of enemy armor. Normally applied with an ability or special perk

Weaken – reduction of enemy attack damage. Normally applied with an ability or special perk

M3 – Mutation level 3 for Expeditions

Mobs – group of lower level enemies

Adds – group of lower level enemies

BiS – Best in slot. Commonly referred to as the best gear for a certain activity. Loosely used term, but it should be referring to one of the best, depending on context.

CDR – Cooldown reduction

Spec – specifications of a skilltree, attributes, or gear set

DoT – Damage over time

PvE – Player vs Environment (fighting things in the game that aren’t other players)
